ello all and welcome to our first edition
for 2009!
Such duality to set the year off with a
bang...new hope blooming for the US
with President Obama's inauguration, yet the world
suffering some of the greatest economic turmoil
it has seen for decades. Add to this generational
shifts in the workplace, the rise of social media
communications and innumerable environmental
concerns, and there can be no doubt that, as Bob
Dylan so aptly put it, the times they are a changin'.
As such, it can leave us way outside our comfort
zone, especially as it seems that recently the world
has arrived at a pretty low place. Everywhere we turn,
we are assailed with news of gloom and doom. And
forgive my penchant for quoting today, but I think we
must keep in mind something Ralph Waldo Emerson
once wisely observed `This time, like all times, is a
good one, if we but know what to do with it'. And
knowing what to do in the midst of such change is
a product of being creative, keeping our thinking
innovative and our eyes peeled for opportunity. The
best thing for new times is new thinking!
Creativity is intrinsic to us all and yet remains a
seriously untapped resource but one essential for
continued growth. History shows us that adversity
is one of the best incubators of creative thought, it
is indeed a breeding ground for innovation. So what
better time to foster a creativity-tapping strategy in
your own organisation? I think the cover image says it
all: take the road less travelled as the sky is the limit...
plus you never know what you'll find along the way!
Change and creativity are the focus of this edition of
NFPM, and in the interest of helping you along this
route, we caught up with Nigel Colin who is bursting
with ideas for you to start your best foot forward on
the path to a creative organisational culture. We also
look at some of the ways our corner of the world is
changing, and ideas to help you roll with it.
Plus, to help shed further light in these dark times and
get your creative juices flowing, INCE 09 is coming
up in November and is now open for registrations!
The program is designed with the current difficulties
in mind, bringing you essential learning and
excellent growth opportunities, as well as superb
network-building with NFP peers. And this latter
opportunity is the one that in such times can prove
truly priceless. The ability to receive fresh input from
a new perspective as well as discuss problems and
share solutions with others who may already have
sailed such waters is not only relatively cost-free but
invaluable in your recession-busting arsenal.
You can also find the 2008 NFPN Awards winners
on page 9. These are organisations and people who
have tapped their creativity and set an example
for us all. But don't miss out on your opportunity
to be a winner in 2009...the 2009 NFPN Awards
program opens for nominations on April 21st, and
you can visit our website to make sure your voice
gets heard! We encourage you to nominate and in so
doing celebrate your organisation's successes and
gain the recognition you deserve for your continuing
dedication to industry best practice and innovation.
Finally, if you weren't aware, we at NFPN have
fallen foul of phone carrier crises, and as a result
have new phone and fax numbers. If you haven't
received the email updates, make sure you check
them out below and update your address book.
As always I would be most appreciative to receive
your feedback and especially love to hear any ideas
for future themes, articles or any idea at all that you
may have for this magazine just drop me a line.
Please read on and enjoy!
